New TRU Athlete: Leonard Futterman

I began rowing my freshman year of high school simply to stay in shape during the off-season of my primary sport, Ice Hockey. I was immediately hooked because I excelled unlike I had in any other sport. I loved the fact that there was no politics in rowing - if you're fast enough, you'll get your spot. Eventually, I focused all of my athletic efforts on rowing, culminating with two Youth National Championship medals and a slot on the 2009 U19 National Team, competing for the USA at the Junior World Championship.

After High School, I would attend Boston University and be coached by Olympian and Hall of Fame member Tom Bohrer. During my time in college, I became the first athlete in BU rowing history (along with two of my classmates) to appear in back-to-back Grand Finals at the IRA National Championship, including program high finishes in the Freshman 8+ (5th) and the Varsity 8+(6th). Furthermore, I was a two time member of the U23 National team, once again competing for my country at the 2011 and 2013 Under-23 World Championships.

During my first year in the elite bracket, I finished 4th at the USRowing Fall Speed Order, 4th at National Selection Regatta 1, 2nd at National Selection Regatta 2, and 4th at Pan Am Games Trials. This year I am training in Philadelphia with the immediate goal of getting a slot on the 2016 Olympic Rowing Team.
